Why Use Pre-assessments?
“Assessment is today’s means of modifying tomorrow’s instruction.” Carol Ann Tomlinson
Pre-assessments play a critical role in knowing and understanding where your students are at and where they need to do. Using pre-assessments are great to see what your students already know or do not know. Your differentiation as a teacher begins with pre-assessments. Using pre-assessments can help you determine how to group your students, determine which students are ready for advanced instruction or will need more scaffolded instruction, and they help drive daily instructions for all students.
"Every good lesson is built on what students know. By providing ELLs with unique learning experiences, activities, and assessments, each student can reach his or her potential (Sasson)." In order to best prepare all students, especially our ELL students we need to use pre-assessments to build on their prior knowledge and expand on what the already know by creating engaging and authentic lessons.
