Additional Methods for CLD Learners
There are lots of other excellent methods for CLD students. To name a few are Sheltered Instruction Operation Protocol and Cognitive Academic Language Learning Approach. I will give a basic overview of these two approaches.
Sheltered Instruction Operation Protocol (SIOP):
The SIOP model is a researched based model that has been around for the last 15 years in the US. It is an instructional model that has eight main components that instructions use when teaching ELL students. When the model is implemented well studies and research has proven that it increases student achievement, improves both academic content skills and language skills, as well as preparing students to be college and career ready. Taken from the the Center of Applied Linguistics here are the eight components of the SIOP model
1. Lesson Preparation
2. Building Background
3. Comprehensible Input
4. Strategies
5. Interaction
6. Practice/Application
7. Lesson Delivery
8. Review & Assessment

Cognitive Academic Language Learning Approach
The CALLA method is a five step systematic approach to teaching ELL students both language and academic content. The end goal of this method is to help build the metacognitive part of the student and help them become more independent and reflective students.
The five steps are:
1. Preparation
2. Presentation
3. Practice
4. Evaluation
5. Expansion
