9. Making the Most of Every Minuet.
|
Time is one of the most precious resources we as educators have! Every minuet must be intentional and accounted for. "The National Center for Education Statistics (1997), examined a large data set of more than 53,000 elementary teachers and found that, on average, teachers spent only 68 percent of school time teaching the core academic curriculum" (Goodwin, B & Hubble, E.R., 2013, p 130). Research has also shown that the more time spent on actual academic learning correlates to higher success. This doesn't suggest that we make our school days longer or we do not engage with our students about their interests, but rather we re-evaluate our time spent in our classrooms. Make sure every minuet counts.
Here are some tips you can use to make every minuet accounted for!
1. Include the time spent on each part of your lesson in your lesson plans.
2. Aim for bell to bell learning.
3. Have a timed "Do-Now."
4. Chunk the learning into 10 -15 mins.
5. Establish routines and procedures for everything in your classroom.
6. Create stations for different leaning outcomes.
7. Give yourself a time audit.
